Study Day led by David Catchpole

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE GOSPEL OF MARK?

During 2012, Sunday by Sunday, Christian people will be hearing and reading the familiar stories in the Gospel of Mark. We all know them so well – and yet, such ancient documents have the capacity to keep on surprising us with new insights and startlingly fresh interpretations of the meaning of Jesus. In the last two decades or so there have been important advances in our understanding of how the overall narrative about Jesus works, i.e. how it has been put together by a skilful author, and how we can follow the struggles and the perplexities of the characters in the story who have not been told, as we are at the outset, that this Gospel is about ‘Jesus the Messiah’.

Plan for the day

9.45  Meet for tea/coffee

10.00-11.15 Session 1:  Mark’s Gospel: A Whole in One

11.15-11.30 Break for more tea/coffee

11.30-12.45 Session 2: Mark’s Jesus: ‘Who Then Is This?’

12.45-1.45 Break for lunch

1.45-3.00 Session 3: Mark’s Christians: A Brave New World!

3.00  The end

Preparation for the day

It would be a great help if you could set aside a little time in advance of the study day to skip-read through the whole of the Gospel of Mark. Perhaps make a note of some of the topics that come across powerfully from a reading of the total story, and see if you can discover some of the tools of the author’s trade: not just what he says but how he says it and how he sets out to influence and persuade his readers. Please bring a Bible with you.

Follow-up to the day

You will have the chance to buy some very readable books about Mark, which will stop our day of study being an end in itself. They will be reduced price offers from the Sarum College Bookshop.

LENT 2012

Once again, St. Mary’s Church is working with other churches in Plympton for an ecumenical Lent Course entitled: Perspectives on Holy Week. We are delighted that we have been able to engage a range of challenging and inspiring speakers, and we extend a warm invitation to all to join this course of study, worship and discussion, organised by Churches Together in Plympton.

Please note that meetings are on Wednesday evenings (with the exception of the first which is on TUESDAY 28th February) and all start at 7.30pm. Each will follow a similar pattern. Refreshments will be served by the host church from 7pm, so do come along a little early to meet and greet! At 7.30pm there will be a short act of worship to launch the evening. Then the speaker will introduce their subject. We will divide into groups for discussion of topics raised by the speaker for about 20 minutes, then come back together for questions and comments before closing with worship. Each session will end by 9pm.
